"Growers Helping Growers"
The Central Wisconsin Pumpkin Growers started as group of giant pumpkin growers in central Wisconsin in 1984, but is now a non-profit organization that has members across the entire state, and even a few from other states. Currently, CWPG is the only giant pumpkin growing club in Wisconsin. Have a look around to see who we are and what we do, and check back for updates on our current activities.

A note from our President:
Game Time
After two early and warm springs it seems we have went the other direction this year. Weather in WI is a battle year after year and as growers we need to do what we can to work with whatever “Mother” throws at us. This year it appears it will require heaters in the hoops and a close eye on the daily forecasts. Most competitive growers have plants set out the first week of May, those that grow for a big display fruit might wait for a couple weeks yet, but to get the plant to a good size by July pollination time they need to be in the patch as soon as possible.
That being said, a few early season lessons learned from experienced growers:
Start backup plants as your chosen seeds have germinated. Plant side by side in the hoops if possible and after a few weeks cull the lesser plant. Hold some backups indoors in larger containers in case of a major problem with the hoops. Give these away to friends, school projects, or other growers when you feel confident your patch plants are good to go.
When there is a “possibility of frost” don’t take chances, protect the plants. Heaters, second covers (totes, boxes, small hoop in a hoop) with some heat added are great insurance. Gallon jugs of hot water placed next to the plants at dusk help tremendously.
ALWAYS provide ventilation to the hoops when the sun may break through, open the ends as temps rise. Checking temps for a few days early will show you what outside temps will provide inside the hoops, learn how much ventilation is required and open them daily. Fried plants are just as dead as frozen plants.
If you are having trouble with germination, hoop setup, setting plants to the patch, or in need of plants for whatever reason, call for help. With the membership growing chances are you have someone in your area that can assist. If not contact one of the more experienced growers and we’ll try to help.
Growers helping growers is what it’s all about in WI now,
Good luck and growum big !!!
